October 2018 – Café Conversation – Forgiveness

Standard

Our next Café Conversation will be Friday 5 October 2018 and we will be discussing: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is complicated. It can be small and personal such as self forgiveness or it can be vast and varied such as forgiveness for crimes committed during war.  Forgiveness is also tied to offering and acceptance, but does it have to have those elements to be effective?  Can we be compassionate without forgiveness?  Let’s have a conversation about forgiveness.

September 2018 Café Conversation – Accessible Art

Standard

Our next Café Conversation will be Friday 7 September 2018 and we will be discussing: Accessible Art

Arts has been a constant theme for us in 2018. We have touched on it in our past conversations about sports, and the nanny state. With Brisbane Festival kicking of in September it is a good time for us to consider accessibility to the arts. Having access to art is often cited as something important to our wellbeing. However we must ask, how accessible are the arts to us? What kind of art (if any?) can we access and what does that mean to us? It also leads to questions about the value we place on art and artists in our society. Come have a conversation about accessible art.

August 2018 Café Conversation – Nanny State

Standard

Our next Café Conversation will be Friday 3 August 2018 and we will be discussing: the Nanny State

Many of our conversations touch on how government is involved in our lives.  At the next café conversation we would like to talk about how much is too much government involvement?  Should the government tell us what we can eat, wear or say?  Is that oppression or is it just a Nanny State?  Where do we draw the line?  Let’s have a conversation about it.

June 2018 Café Conversation – Feminism

Standard

Our next Café Conversation will be Friday 1 June 2018 and we will be discussing: Feminism

In 2018 conversations about women’s rights and representation have gotten more attention.  Movements like #metoo have gained momentum, as well as conversations about women in government and film.  The next café conversation will be a chance to talk about these movements and how (or if?) they fit in with feminism.  Are these movements still feminist or are they something different?  Has feminism re-branded? Everyone is welcome to join in a discussion about feminism.  Come share your views.

Standard

Our next Café Conversation will be Friday 4 May 2018 and we will be discussing: Politeness

Being polite can look different across, society, gender, and culture.  What does politeness look like to you?  Is politeness still something we teach and talk about or has it become an old fashioned idea?  Does politeness stop us from saying what we really mean?  Let’s have a (polite) conversation about it.
